Josef Mengele was the oldest of three sons. His father was a local industrialist that manufactured farming equipment. Everyone feared his mother, Walburga, because of her terrible temper and believed she didn't have the ability to love.
Grade SchoolJosef did well in school and was liked by most of the students, teachers, and all his neighbors. He was nicknamed Beppo and grew up to be very handsome with a strong sense of confidence in himself. He desired to be well known and wealthy when he grew up.

CollegeHis father wanted him to work at his factory but Josef wished to start a career in science and anthropology. He studied at the University of Munich and majored in philosophy and medicine. This was when Josef first began to side with the Nazi Socialist Party.

University of Frankfert Josef received a position as a research assistant with the Third Reich Institute for Heredity and worked for Professor Otmar Freiherr Von Verschuer. Professor Verschuer taught Mengele that experimenting on human beings was acceptable if it advanced a scientific cause. Verschuer sparked Mengele's obsession with twins and Mengele kept in contact with his professor throughout his experiments in the war.
